The belt system in Brazilian jiu-jitsu indicates the level of skill and experience of the practitioner. This system has its origins in the judo belt system, but with some differences, such as the division into children (youth to 15 years old) and adults (16 years old and up) and the issuance of strips.

Each strip has a different color that indicates the level of training. Beginners usually start with a white belt and then progress to blue, purple, brown and black belts. The black belt, which is the highest level, also has different grades to indicate additional experience and skill. The belt system in Brazilian jiu-jitsu also helps jiu-jitsu practitioners set goals and motivate themselves to reach new levels.
