Boxing is an intense and exciting sport. However, the risk of injury in boxing, even at an amateur level, is quite high. This was the case until wearing a boxing headguard became mandatory. It is the only reliable way to protect athletes from head injuries. Any arguments against using a headguard seem unconvincing, especially considering the increased number of injuries when headguards are not used. Keeping your head safe and intact is the top priority, and adapting to movement coordination while wearing a headguard happens quickly.
Athletes competing at the international level purchase professional, specialized models that have been officially accredited by the International Boxing Association (AIBA).
The mandatory use of headguards in amateur boxing at an official level was introduced in 1986. Initially, this innovation sparked a storm of conflicting opinions. Some rightly believed that headguards were absolutely necessary, prioritizing health over trophies. Others insisted that headguards were an unnecessary burden, interfering with fights by restricting breathing and reducing an athlete’s peripheral reaction.
In this debate, common sense prevailed, and headguards became an official part of amateur boxing. The level of protection a boxer receives depends on the type of headguard:
- Open headguards protect the forehead, ears, and temples.
- Soft inserts enhance ear protection.
- Headguards with a solid top protect the crown of the head.
- Closed headguards guard against side impacts to the jaw and nose.
- Models with transparent or metal face shields offer additional protection.
Headguard materials
The quality and properties of the materials used in a headguard significantly impact a boxer’s level of protection. Thickness is also crucial. The most effective headguards have a thick, firm, and durable protective layer. However, the thicker the headguard, the heavier it becomes, which can be a disadvantage in a match. There are no strict recommendations—each boxer must decide for themselves.

Types of boxing headguards
You can choose a boxing headguard with any design and level of protection based on personal preference. Generally, headguards can be:
- Open or closed at the top.
- With an open or closed face.
The more open the headguard, the better the visibility and easier breathing. However, this also increases the risk of blows to unprotected areas of the head.
For boxing matches, more closed headguard models with a higher level of protection are typically used. Training headguards provide reliable protection for the forehead, ears, and cheeks.
For open competitions, only open boxing headguards are allowed. Training headguards significantly reduce visibility and are unsuitable for matches. However, design and color should not be the main criteria when choosing a headguard. The level of protection it provides is the most crucial factor.
Many boxers use two headguards—one with higher protection for sparring and an open model for matches.
